đŸș Say hello to a new council and goodbye to a beloved beer

From swearing-in to sing-alongs, your week in St. John’s starts here.

Week of October 15-21, 2025

Good morning St. John’s, This is St. John’s Living - the local newsletter that's the email equivalent of catching the elevator just before the doors close. Good timing. Great vibes.

In this week’s St. John’s Living:

  • New Council being sworn in đŸ›ïž

  • Need to conserve water 🚰

  • Property coming up for auction 🏠

  • Say goodbye to Jockey Club đŸș

Let’s get into it

đŸ›ïž New Season, New Council

Election results are in and the new St. John’s City Council will be sworn in this afternoon at 3pm. You’ll see some familiar faces like Mayor Danny Breen but there are plenty of newcomers to council chambers. What changes would you like to see in the city?

🚰 Water, water
nowhere
The City of St. John’s is asking everyone - residents and anyone connected to the municipal water system - to help out by using less water. With water levels still low after a dry spell, every drop you save helps protect our supply and keep taps flowing for all!

🏠 Going once, going twice

Did you know that, every now and then, the city has houses up for auction? The next sale will be held on November 27 and you can bid on one of 5 available properties. The lowest bids start at just $2300.

đŸș The last batch is brewing as we speak
The list of Newfoundland-only beers from major brewers will be down to four soon. Labatt is currently brewing the last batch of Jockey Club. Originally brewed by Bavarian Brewing, Jockey Club has been a staple among beer-drinking uncles and grandfathers. There’s still a little bit of time to enjoy the two/$5 special at The Ship before Jockey Club rides off into the sunset like so many beer brands before it.

Local Business

  • You may not see the sign on the shop yet, but J.J. Neville & Sons is now open in their new location on Hamlyn Rd.
